Cool!

I'm also excited 'cos I spy a place I used to live, as well as a near by place I lived at another time (I used to live near Lillydale, down near the bottom, and Avenel, near Euroa)

Of Avenel perhaps some but not many as we weren't there very long, and Gruyere near Lillydale perhaps so. Will go looking and post any tomorrow or the day after.

Oh no, I can understand smelling. It would have a few layers I would think, and imagine where they've all come from!

I meant to post before Nuit, to say that I haven't myself got any photos from Lilydale or Avenel (except school photos). Since I don't have any (and haven't asked my parents yet) I thought I'd try and track down some pics on the net. And I have learnt a few things that if I did know before I've certainly forgotten.

Now I remember when we lived near Avenel (out of town, but we went to school there) that there was a connection between Euroa (where we did our shopping every Saturday morning) and Ned Kelly. But I've just found out that Ned lived in Avenel, and went to school there until his father died. I went to the same school (if for a few months only) as Ned Kelly!!! Gah! I'm thinking now how we'd walk down to the swimming pool with our class, and that Ned could well have walked those streets too...
Anyhow, here's a link to the primary school's website. There's a gallery of photos, though as they focus on the students there's not much of the surroundings to see. It has changed a bit since I was there. They wear a uniform now!
There's also the local shire's website which also has a gallery, though once again, it's more people than the countryside.
There's also this site which has some good info on Avenel.
Phew! What a post!

OH! Thank you! I couldn't get the middle link to work- will try later, but a cute picture of the school surrounding and the last site is great!
Lots of details about the Avenel, and the area around it- about Hunter's Creek where Ned Kelly saved the boy from drowning and received the green and gold sash. Fantastic, thanks for posting that and taking the time to find the links

No problem at all nuit, I loved looking back over places I used to live (we moved around a bit when I was growing up). I miss Victoria! After I posted that before I came across this site aswell Ned Kelly Trail I see on the map there another place I used to live near to- Kyneton.
Aside from checking if my parents have any pics (I'm pretty sure my brother does from the day we left the farm at Avenel- it was the only day it snowed, and we were heading to sunny, hot Queensland ) I'll have a look for stuff about Lilydale on the net. Wonder if they've decided to spell it with one or two l's now?

Heh, well today I found a site that has quite a number of pics of the landscapes, so I was checking out all my old haunts aside from those Ned related. They don't have pics up for all the places they list, but I'm sure there's enough to look at for now
Travel Victoria
and direct links
Euroa
Lilydale
No pictures of Kyneton in the photos section there, but Mount Macedon is fairly close by (BTW if anyone's interested Hanging Rock of Picnic at Hanging Rock fame is near here. Mount Macedon was also one site of major fires during the Ash Wednesday bushfires back in the early 80's. We were actually living there at the time).
I haven't had much of a look at other Ned related places at this site- I got stuck in going down my own memory lane!

Unbelievably cool, Nuit. Great inspiration. It look as though nothing has change - just needs a dirt street instead of pavement.

And Avalon Mists, you have great taste in books. my very fave

Nice pictures, thanks Avalon and Nuit! Really brings it to life, doesn't it, when there are actual buildings they would have been to...

I live right here in Victoria and have never been to Beechworth, even though we tend to spend weekends away in different spots around the state quite often. It'll be next on my list now and I'm taking Leggy with me when I go!

So glad you liked them nuit It was my pleasure since I was looking back at places I used to live. I'm still getting over the fact that I went to the same school as Ned Kelly, though I don't imagine it was the same buildings. And even though we had the old style desks with spots for inkwells and the lift-up lids, I don't imagine they were over 100 years old in 1986. I remember walking to the pool in Avenel from school, and stopping at the war memorial along the way on Anzac Day, but I don't think we ever went to the cemetary where his father is buried.

My sister has just looked at the Euroa pics and thought the same thing- it looks prettier than when we were there. But as she suggested it might have been the difference in season when the pics were taken (and we only lived at Avenel for a few months so didn't see it in Spring/Summer/Autumn). Wasn't it the National Bank at Euroa that they held up?

Anyhow, will have to check out the other Ned places later. Aside from the Ned things, going through these has made we want even more to go back and visit these places! Maybe a road trip

Well... I've just spent three days touring the Kelly country, and thought I would share some of the photos I took. It was just awe-inspiring to walk through all these places that I have read so much about, and the country around Benalla and Beechworth really is so beautiful. (Click for bigger.)

Joe Byrne's grave at Benalla cemetery:

Countryside on the way from Benalla to Glenrowan:

And specially for Nuit, the Beechworth Telegraph Office:

Side view:

Welcome to the Commercial Hotel (the door on the left that says exit leads into the (Kelly) bar:

Want to check out what it's like upstairs?

Do you want to see more?

YES YES YES!!!
ahem..yes we would love to Gem- thank you.
Wow those ones at the Commmercial are just so fabulous- really just how i imagined it would be and the Telegraph Office! what do you mean there is no upstairs?? heehehhe. I love the countryside photos gem - it is just so dramatic and you can imagine the horses racing over the hills. Joe Byrne's grave, well what can i say..looks to be in a beautiful spot and very peaceful and after such a violent end I am glad of that.
Thank you so much for the pictures honey. I look forward to more..

Fantastic pics Gem! Of course we'd love to see more! Love the tree there beside Joe's grave, and the second pic looks like some of the places I used to live. Looking forward to seeing more of the Commercial Hotel. Thanks again Gem

Okay, by popular demand here are some more...

The Beechworth Post Office:

Beechworth main street, Ford Street (and for those who might be interested in such a fact, the Commercial Hotel is on the left, the dark balcony where the powerline goes):

Camp Street:

HM Beechworth Prison, built in 1859, still housing about 120 inmates (all Kelly gang members spent some time inside these walls):

A view into the Kelly bar at the Commercial Hotel:

Getting sick of these yet?

Gem they are lovely photos and yes we want more.

It looks peaceful where Joe is buried, for some reason I was expecting a bigger headstone.

Well alright then, you twisted my arm...

Here is the Hibernian Hotel, apparently the only one of the 'originals' in Beechworth that never changed its name, and it has Kelly connections too:

Here's a view outwards from Beechworth, towards the Woolshed Valley:

Here is the dock from the Beechworth Court House - Ned Kelly, his mother Ellen Kelly, Joe Byrne and Aaron Sherrit all stood here at one time or another:

Here's another view from the outside of the Commercial Hotel (my hubby is sitting on the left with his back to the camera and that's my eldest daughter
in the hat and pink top):

This is the old bootmaker and saddler shop in Benalla where the fight between Ned Kelly and his police escort took place in 1877 after Ned had been arrested for riding across a footpath and drunkenness and where Ned said if he ever shot a man it would be Constable Lonigan (which he then later did):

And finally, Glenrowan where Ned Kelly is the main business... Here's a scene from an animated theatre show:

And the site of the Glenrowan Inn - it's privately owned and there's only a sign pointing out that this was the place. The inn stood where the bushes are now. When I took the photo, I was standing roughly where the police would have been:

The railway - it was roughly near the bend at the top of the picture where the schoolteacher Curnow warned the police and stopped their train:

I hope you've all enjoyed these pictures. It was an absolutely fantastic trip.

Fantastic pics again Gem. How was it standing there looking at the old site of the Glenrowan Inn, where the police stood? Reckon I'd find it a bit creepy myself. Gee, they did well animating the rain

Thanks for posting more Gem I agree with Avalon that it would be quite strange to stand in a spot where something so awful happened.
