From MSN NEWS Latin America (head ups from AINT IT COOL):

Quote:
Actor Johnny Depp was chosen to play "Mad Hatter" in Tim Burton's version of "Alice in Wonderland". Burton was hired by Disney studios to make the 3D version if Lewis Carrol's classic. Depp is the second confirmed cast member. Australian Mia Wasikowska will play Alice.

Depp and Verbinski Reteam on Rango
Source: Variety
September 10, 2008

Johnny Depp will reunite with "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy director Gore Verbinski on Rango, an animated film that Paramount will finance and distribute.

Variety says the studio has slotted the film for a March 2011 release.

Depp will voice the lead character, a household pet that goes on an adventure to discover its true self.

John Logan (The Aviator) has written the script from an idea hatched by Verbinski. Verbinski will work with Industrial Light & Magic on the animation.

The trade adds that the CG Rango will be Paramount's most ambitious star-driven entry into animation.

Depp is set to start working on the film in January. Verbinski will direct the project as he continues to develop an adaptation of the Take-Two video game BioShock for Universal.

Breaking News: Johnny Depp Also The Lone Ranger?
Source:ComingSoon.net, Heather Newgen
September 24, 2008

During Disney's preview today in Hollywood, the studio questioned who could possibly play the titular character in its upcoming feature The Lone Ranger.

At that, Disney rolled out the USC marching band to come down and play the Ranger's theme song. This was followed by an appearance by Depp himself who took to the stage in full Captain Jack Sparrow attire...wearing The Lone Ranger's mask.

The Lone Ranger, said to be an origin story, is written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.

This is a breaking new story, so we'll update you on the project, and Depp's possible involvement, as more details come in.
UPDATE AT COMINGSOON WEBSITE : "According to our Disney reps, Depp is officially signed to play Tonto and not the Lone Ranger as initially implied."

Thank you for finding these news!

A household pet! That's indeed funny, NinJa!

But I would prefer to see a movie with him and not only with his voice.

So I hope he will play a role in The Lone Ranger or any other movie.

Johnny Depp to star in more Disney projects, including "Pirates 4"

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Superstar actor Johnny Depp has signed on to three new Disney projects, including the fourth installment of the blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, the entertainment industry newspaper Variety confirmed Thursday.

Along with the reprisal of off-beat pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp will star as the long-suffering Native American sidekick Tonto in a new version of the iconic "Lone Ranger," produced by hit producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

If this wasn't enough for the 45-year-old actor, Depp will also play the Mad Hatter in director Tim Burton's adaptation of the classic "Alice in Wonderland," using a mix of 3D animation and performance capture technology similar to that used for 2007's "Beowulf."

The announcements for "Ranger," "Wonderland" and "an additional role" were made before a crowd of roaring fans in Hollywood Wednesday when Depp appeared at the Walt Disney Showcase, a preview of the studio's productions over the next few years.

The "Pirates 4" confirmation arrived early Thursday through the actor's representatives in Variety.

The franchise has been a worldwide phenomenon since the first installment in 2003, earning more than 2.6 billion dollars at the box office.

Fans are rejoicing the actor's reunion with director Burton, who has created the milestone projects of Depp's career, including his breakout role in the 1990 blockbuster "Edward Scissorhands," and 2005's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Like many of Depp's roles, the new Disney projects seek to attract as many adult viewers as they do younger fans.

No premiere dates for any of the projects have been announced.

Wahoo! I can absolutely see him doing all these things -

The Mad Hatter - well really, who else could play it?! I can imagine he'd find it irresistible.

Tonto - should be fascinating to see what he does with that. And how much it will make Tonto a bigger role.

CAPTAIN JACK BACK! Well we shall see. I have some mixed emotions about quitting while you are ahead but I will keep my fingers crossed.

A Household Pet? Oh, what a straight line!

Finally, Dark Shadows - I saw or heard and interview where he said he always dreamed of being Barnabus Collins, the lead vampire, when he was a kid - the ultimate in cool. He will be shivery I am sure!

An embarassment of riches all told

WOW, he's gonna be super busy. I am so excited though Lots of Johnny to look forward to!

I, too, have mixed emotions about POTC 4... I have rarely seen a 4th installment I liked. I am really doubting this one.

Hmmmm....I seem to remember one of the POTC writers talking to Orlando about future movies/roles and Orlando saying he wanted to be a cowboy. Well, they are writing the script for The Lone Ranger movie. What about a Lone Ranger with an English accent????

Johnny Depp to Star in Hand of Dante
Source: Variety
December 3, 2008

Johnny Depp's production company Infinitum Nihil has acquired screen rights to the Nick Tosches novel "In the Hand of Dante." The novel will be developed as a potential star vehicle for Depp, reports Vareity.

Depp will produce with his Infinitum Nihil partner Christi Dembrowski. The company, which has a first-look deal with Warner Bros. and Graham King's GK Films, optioned the book with its own money.

The book revolves around Dante's masterwork "The Divine Comedy," and tells parallel storylines involving Dante in 14th-century Italy as he tries to complete the work, and a contemporary storyline involving Tosches, who is asked to authenticate what might be Dante's original manuscript. Depp would play Tosches. The novel was published in 2002.

Depp, who is playing the Mad Hatter in the Tim Burton-directed Alice in Wonderland, has a dance card that includes toplining another "Pirates of the Caribbean" film, The Lone Ranger, and voicing the title character in the Gore Verbinski-directed animated film Rango.
