Well - I just finished watching the last episode and I have to agree with you Nuit, it was harrowing. They made it quite plain that the police deliberately set up Aaron and used him as bait and that scene of Joe shooting him was pretty much exactly as recorded. And Glenrowan... all those poor people inside the Inn, the disregard the police had for their safety. The scene with Joe's body hanging on the prison door and Ned's hanging - was really hard to watch.

All in all I think it was very well done, a bit dated as I said earlier but that's to be expected. I really liked John Jarratt as Ned, and my other favourite was Tom Lloyd, I don't think his part in the whole affair normally gets the recognition it deserves. Filmed in the actual locations, beautiful scenery. But it bugged me that Aaron kept saying 'Bourne' instead of Byrne!

Would definitely recommend this to anyone who was interested in finding out a bit more about the whole Kelly gang story, based on real facts.

Wow - can't believe it was four years ago I watched the series! Will definitely have to watch it again now - have just finished reading the companion book to the series by Les Carlyon and it's definitely one of the best Kelly books (although technically I guess it's more a magazine than an actual book). Am again struck by how similar to Ned John Jarratt looks (with his genuine beard!) and when you look at actual photos of the people involved and actors who portray them in this series, the resemblance is often uncanny. *zips lips about Joe Byrne* The real story is told along with the story of filming the miniseries, with interesting information about the costumes and the guns and the location. I would definitely recommend getting this one, is on a par with Ian Jones (well he and his late wife wrote the script for the series and were very involved in the making of it, so not surprising at all). "The Last Outlaw" by Les Carlyon.

Just checked Netflix to see if they have it but they don't Sounds like an interesting series. I'm glad they didn't include the hanging and the door in the movie. I usually don't watch the end of the movie as it is (can't watch Joe die) but to see him on the door would be too much. I've seen the photo and it's so sad what they did to him.

Isn't on Amazon either...may have to get a copy of the book when I come ;P

The series is really fabulous CD, I'd lend it to you but will be the wrong region- unless you have a multi region player? Anyhow, happy to do so if it would work or you want to give it a go. My kids saw most of it and were laughing at the way people kept galloping across the screen. My dad was watching the last bit with me, I think he thought I had gone simple all of a sudden...was very emotional and stark.

I'm sure my DVD player is not multi region. But that's sweet of you! Not a lot of info in Alabama about the Kelly Gang. Although my friend found Robert Drewe's book 'Ned Kelly' at a used book store and I'm reading that now.

Is the Mick Jagger version worth watching? I can get that on Netflix.

I LOVE Robert Drewes book- you mean Our Sunshine the book that the film was loosely built on? Thoughts here It is an incredible book. Not everyones taste for sure but definately mine, I carried it around for some months.

The Mick Jagger...weeeeellll. It has its moments- there is deal more about the irish culture, lots of singing etc. He is really NOT Ned, his accent and his beard is ridiculous. And the Joe is in fact Inspector Taggart if you ever saw that...

There are some kind of cute bits with Joe and Aaron and I liked that at the end Dan and Steve run over to Joe as he dies. It is worth seeing if it doesn't cost too much and you have some time on your hands. I certainly think there were bits that were interesting perspectives but....yeah.

It won't cost me anything to rent it on Netflix but Taggart from Beverly Hills Cop? As Joe? Surely not. I think I'll give it a miss.

Yes, the same book as Our Sunshine but has a picture of Orlando and Heath as Joe and Ned. Says its titled Our Sunshine in Australia. I am loving it so far. Thanks for the link to the discussion.

Taggart (Mark McManus) from the Scottish tv series (from the 80s) of the same name, CD.

Oh thank goodness! The guy from Beverly Hills Cop is no Joe, that's for sure! Thanks Gem! I will have to google him just to see. I can't imagine anyone can top Orlando's Joe

Not sure that Taggart was any more of a Joe, not to mention the about 45 year old Steve Bisley in the mini series, but yeah thats a certainty!

Ahem Nuit, referring you to previous page and the fact that Steve Bisley was in actual fact only about 28...

The thing about Orlando's Joe was not just his looks (which of course don't really resemble the real Joe at all) but the way he moved and carried himself. Without a doubt his best performance to date, and not surprisingly he was nominated for an AFI award (Aussie Oscar) although unfortunately he didn't win it.

I am nowhere near as familiar with any of the films as Nuit CD so have not offered my opinion for that reason, really need to watch Orlando's NK again too, has been ages...

I know... I think he's one of those people who've never really looked young, poor Steve. For me it's also the voice, having heard Orlando's there's just no way anyone can come even close.*sigh* How do you reckon he compares with the real Joe then?

Doesn't have any information about what region it is though - do you have the same region code in NZ as Australia, Tc?

Weren't they selling the DVD through Iron Outlaw? Thought that was where I got my copy, but might be wrong.

Joe...Joe. Well I think FLC was right..what did she say now?

Although Orlando bears no physical resemblance to Joe, they clearly share head-turning looks and easy charm.
And I think you are spot on with the voice, but that 'speak softly but carry a big gun' quality that does me in.

Ah, that sums it up perfectly!

Hmm,I was taking a look at that guy,Mark Mcmanus...I've seen pics of him when young, but I can't picture him as Joe.Sure that he got clear eyes as the real Joe,but even so I think Orlando fits better in the profile, the handsome and almost refined guy(if you compares him with his fellows)but still rough and tough enough for being a bushranger. It remember me a bit to Butch Cassidy the charming outlaw played by Paul Newman(Orlando's idol, btw).I agree that the colour of his eyes or hair is not so important as the whole sensation he give us,I said once that is Joe spirit in Orlando's body...what reduces us to a paddle of goo...Our man did a marvellous job for sure. And I can see some resemblance in that terrible pic of dead Joe hunging on the door....the way his hair is combed and the beard...
