Working with paths....

Ok ladies, first of all I'd like to say that I'm not an expert in any way,I'm just sharing with you some things I learnt from others, and by my own curiosity....I'll try to do it as clear as posible. We can get this effects(or something similar) by downloading some brushes, but there's nothing bad in learn how to do it by ourself....
For this tut we're gonna work with the Pen Tool and Curves.

1. Open a new document,in the size you need,I used 600 x 400.Must be coloured so we can see more easily our work evolution. Then open a new layer,by clicking at the bottom o the layers palette.Click on the Pen tool, and set the path option on the menu bar.

2. Now we start to trace some curves with our pen,in the way you see in the illustrations below.

3. When we have the curve effect we are looking for,we right clic on the layer and choose the option Stroke path.

4. In the new little window, choose Brush, and click on the little button below(Simulate pressure).I used a circular soft brush of 9 pixels wide.Click OK.

5. And we'll get this,(colour is not important,we can edite it later)

6. Now we press Ctrl+h and the path guide will disappear......

7. And we can edit the form in the way we like....I went to Layers/layer Style and chose Drop Shadow, and Outer Glow....Finally I set Colour Overlay in White.Duplicating layers you can get lots of different combinations....Don't forget clic on the eye of the Background layer for make it dissapear, merge the visibles(Layers/Merge Layers),and save the file as PNG.

Note:If you want combine differents forms, you just have to click on New Layer and repeat the 6 first steps, then right click on layer 1>Copy Layer Style, and then right click on layer 2(on the layers palette)>Paste Layer Style....and all the effects will be atomatically copied on the new layer.

Hope everything was clear enough....

Thank you Lola! This looks great! I can't wait to try it out. As I said earlier, I have never paid any attention to this tool. I'm glad that you started with the beggining basics.

Have tried this now Lola & although quite fun I had trouble drawing the shapes I wanted. How do you get exactly what you want?

Hmmm is a matter of practise a bit Tc....just try differents positions of the cursor and click and drag in the anchor point.

I found a visual tut that can be very useful

Ps Paths.part 1

Was playing with this today.

I found that getting a shape I liked was a bit hard too, but I think that is one of those things that practice and playing will help improve.

I also think that for making squiggles I prefer the "free from pen", all the same steps, but it does not always make such a crisp look to the path.

While using just the "pen too" I did notice that it is also easier to make a number of points to create a line and then use the "convert point" tool to play with the curves at each point.

Lola, I could not get to the "stroke path" the way you did from the layer. I had to go to the path tab (in the same pallet) and then right click on the layer in there.

This is soooo much fun playing with a tool I have never expored much before. Thank you Lola
