God's Hands

Title: God's Hands
Author: Ki
Disclaimer: The character of Balian of Ibelin was a living man - he belongs to himself and those who have further told his story. I mean no harm.
Category: Original Work
Type: Poetry
Rating: Nothing Scary
Brief Summary: Perhaps what Balian was thinking when he came to that place that was most holy...

Who am I?
A man who fights
Wars of faith
Yet I am faithless
Godforsaken

Heaven lost
I searched for salvation
Alone I waited
In that most holy of places
But God was not there

Gone from my heart
But surely if anywhere
The Lord would be in this land
Names most revered
Places of power

This city of the saviour's birth
Governed by the Godless
Heedless of his commandments
Tis not the infidels
But those that wear the cross

Deeds done in his name
That shame this sinner
For those are not Gods hands
That kill, maim and steal
Then break bread in his name

I cannot remain
Yet I cannot leave
Something calling me
Holding me
Waiting for me….

Wow.

Just....wow.

Wow. I can't seem to get past that. So perfectly Balian and so perfectly true (and I wish it were me holding him...) - powerful Ki, and right to the heart of it, in simple prose, as usual.

Quote:

That kill, maim and steal
Then break bread in his name
Just....wow.

Love it.

PS: Can I just add here, that it occurred to me after I'd posted this, that this appears to be one of those things you wish you could thank Orlando for - you know, how you've made friendships and walked pathways you might not have pushed yourself to do otherwise, and discovered things and made advancements in your life directly related to the influence of this site...I have never got poetry, you know that. And yet, here I am, positively eager to jump in and read anything that Ki writes. I get excited when I see a post, because I know I'm in for a treat of succinct words with deep meaning and powerful emotion behind short, yet huge, verses. I get it. I will never end up reading Wordsworth or Shelley or Byron or any of those, because I just DON'T get that, all too flowery and obtuse and quite beyond my capacity or patience levels to spend long enough lost in to understand it. But Ki, I am learning the power of poetry through your beautiful poems and I really do jump in with great excitement when I see you've posted. I just wanted you to understand that I'm learning so much and enjoying the process and to thank you for that opportunity.

Well said, Luna and ditto.

Ki,
I love that poem it is so precise and deep. I find myself referring to this particular movie on so many occasions. Most notably during my theology classes. It is really a great example of the corruption that was present during the early church that drove away many of the faithful and turned many God-fearing people to other ways.
Just because one wears the trappings of a religion does not make them a religous person. We have a saying in the South "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." Which is basically saying if you start with a pig no matter how you dress it, it's still a pig.

Unfortunately Balian's character said it most succinctly when talking to the priest after the seige of Jerusalem.

Priest: "Convert now, repent later."
Balian" "You've taught me a lot about religion, your Grace."

You say it quite well here, never confuse religion with faith. They are two different things. Balian lost his "religion" but not his faith in himself and utimately in God even if he didn't believe it.

Balian: "God does not know me."
Friend: "How could you have accomplished all you have if God does not know you?"

He was blessed with a mission he just did not see it. Sometimes things are taken from you to clear the path for a greater gift or purpose. Who you are is shaped by where you have been and what you have been through.

I loved this work Ki. Well done Sugar. Well done!

Snoey - getting off my soapbox and shutting up for a change.

I agree with Snoey and Luna Ki, that was very well done.
It's another one that stretches across time as well. It seems there is a lot going on "in the name of God" or what ever name he is given, that has nothing to to with God.

Ki... Luna has said it all, both about your poem and the life experiences that come from being on this site. You have really turned my thoughts of poetry around. Thank you.

Brilliant. Simply, utterly, emotionally, brilliant.

Lanta

PS - Do NOT get me started on organized religion. We could be here for a very long time. Note I said "religion" and not "faith." They are two completely different concepts.

It seems everything has already been said by everyone else so will just say I totally agree. The verse Luna quoted struck me as the most powerful too. You are blessed with a wonderful talent Ki.

Without wishing to sound like I'm writing an assignment for an English class, I love the way you play with contrasts in this. Just beautiful...

To have come so far on his quest and find so many more unanswered questions. It made me want to watch again the scene where he buries his wife's cross. You capture that poignancy fabulously. Again. I envy you your talent for poetry. What I see in the solace and intricacy of finding that exact right word that speaks so much.

Never able myself to get much beyond

There was a young man of France
Who thought he might take a chance
Go on a crusade
His fortune weren't made
But he nearly got pierced with a lance.

Not the same somehow is it? I'll get me coat.

Luna - thank you for the comments but also thank you for making me think about Balian. Reading your work has put him at the front of my thoughts lately. And yes is one of those things that I would like to say thanks for. I had not written since I was at school and I often wonder how I would live without being able to write.

Snoey - I appreciate your thoughtful feedback and yes faith and religion are different, though many people don't see that or want to see that.

Kat - thank you, is lovely to see you here and you are so very right.

Lanta - It means a lot your feedback thank you. Yes I know exactly what you are saying.

Nuit - thank you so very much

Gem - I am glad that you liked it

FLC - thank you for the lovely words. I quite liked your little poem...

Another amazing poem Ki & I agree with Luna & everyone. I like that verse already pointed out but I also like this one:

This city of the saviour's birth
Governed by the Godless
Heedless of his commandments
Tis not the infidels
But those that wear the cross

Isn't that the truth of it? Look forward as ever to reading more from you hon.
